Hammersmith Regeneration project.

UCL, London, 2015.

In 2014, Boris Johnson the London Mayor supported the scheme to replace the Hammersmith flyover - largely criticized by the public opinion and the council - by a "Flyunder", a west London road tunnel. Three propositions were developed from a one mile scheme to a two and a half mile scheme. Technical reports showed positives results through comparing the tunnel costs (from £218 million to £1.7 billion) with the potential incomes of the land released by the new infrastructure (£1 billion).

We were assigned to develop an urban analysis and a consequent urban design project. In first instance, the field visits gave us an idea of an area with great potential due to the proximity with the river, though barely exploited. The A4 motorway developed in the 60s produced a segregation in the relation river/high street and a loss of use of available green spaces. Furthermore, the analysis of the high street deterioration, the traffic and the housing conditions were key elements in the development of the proposal.
